How Can Aromatherapy Help With Sleep?

bottles of essential oil

Aromatherapy has been known to help soothe & relax, improve concentration and help relief sickness symptoms. But today we explore how it can help with catching some quality zzz's.

What is Aromatherapy & how does it work?

Aromatherapy is a holistic therapy that uses natural plant extracts (usually in the form of Essential Oils) to promote health and well-being. It is sometimes called Essential Oil Therapy. Aromatherapy uses aromatic essential oils to help improve various aspects of the body/mind. It can enhance both physical and emotional health.

Usually Aromatherapy is enjoyed with an Ultrasonic Essential Oil Diffuser (which is a key feature of Baby Dream Machine). You choose the desired Essential Oil, add a few drops to the ultrasonic diffuser, add some water and voila!

The ultrasonic diffuser combines the Essential Oil and water into a mist which releases an aroma into the air, hence the term Aromatherapy.

Which Essential Oils are known to help with sleep?

The main essential oil known to help with sleep and relaxation in Lavender. How? Lavender has been known to:

  • Work as an anxiolytic (an anxiety reliever) and as a sedative, to increase relaxation and calm, and help bring about sleep

  • Interact with the neurotransmitter GABA to help quiet the brain and nervous system activity, reducing agitation, anger, aggression, and restlessness

As per The Sleep Doctor,  in his article titled The Relaxing, Sleep-Promoting, Health-Boosting Powers of Lavender "Lavender oil is a popular aromatherapy choice for sleep and relaxation. Several studies show using lavender oil for aromatherapy can improve sleep quality, including in people with insomnia, depression, and anxiety. Aromatherapy using lavender oil may also increase time spent in deep, slow-wave sleep."

At The Baby Dream Company, we use 100% USDA Certified Organic Lavender oil in our Sweetest Dreams essential oil.

How do you pick a good quality essential oil?

Not all essential oils are created equal and it is important to understand what to look for in your essential oils. These three tips below are things you can look out for when assessing which essential oils to use:

  1. Look at the origin of where the essential oil is produced. All of The Baby Dream Machine essential oils are bottled and produced in California, USA.

  2. Look for 'organic' essential oils as they are more pure and free of harmful chemicals.

  3. Be sure to verify the organic rating. For instance, all of The Baby Dream Machine essential oils are USDA certified (the highest US ranking).

What age can I start using the Aromatherapy function of Baby Dream Machine with my child?

We always recommend waiting until your baby/child is at least 4 months of age before you start using the Aromatherapy feature of Baby Dream Machine. If your baby is not yet 4 months of age, as an alternative you can use the cool-mist humidifier feature (without the Essential Oils) of Baby Dream Machine which also aids in promoting quality sleep.

How many drops am I supposed to add to the water basin?

If choosing to use the Aromatherapy function of Baby Dream Machine, please follow our Aromatherapy Guide to find age appropriate dosage recommendations.
